Best Sewing Kits and Gifts for Kids

I’m always thrilled when I’m contacted by mums and grandmothers telling me their kids want to sew! Yay!! And one of the first questions they ask is, “What are the best sewing gifts for kids who want to learn to sew?”

Often they’re reaching out because they simply don’t know where to start. It can be daunting not knowing which needle is best, what fabric to choose, or where on earth to buy all the supplies.

So in this gift guide, I’m sharing the best sewing kits for kids and sewing gifts for beginner. These are thoughtful, easy, confidence-building ideas that make learning to sew simple and fun. Whether you’re looking for a kids sewing kit, a creative birthday present, or a gift for a child who loves crafts, these ideas are a wonderful way to encourage creativity and hands-on learning.

But first…

Why Learning to Sew is More than just Sewing

Sewing isn’t just about needle and thread, it’s a creative, hands-on way for kids to express themselves. It builds patience, problem-solving skills, and confidence. Every stitch is a little victory, a reminder that they can make something all on their own.

Whether it’s a colourful felt softie or a festive stocking, kids feel proud when they hold up what they’ve sewn. And when they start with the right materials, sewing becomes something empowering, not frustrating.

1. Best Kids’ Sewing Kits: The Easiest Way to Begin

I once had a mum tell me she felt like she was cheating when she bought her child a sewing kit instead of gathering all the individual supplies. I told her she was absolutely not cheating! Sewing kits are a wonderful way to help kids start sewing, especially if the idea of tracking down felt, needles, and thread feels a little overwhelming right now.

The following is a list of fun first sewing kits. In most cases kits are suitable for kids 4 years and up. All fabric in the kit is pre cut and pre holed and kits mostly use a plastic needle.

Krafun My First Sewing Kit

There are 7 projects in this kit including a pillow, unicorn bag, card holder and rainbow keyring. All fabric comes with pre-punched holes and pre-cut shapes so only requires use of a plastic needle which is included.

Krafun My First Sewing Bag Kit

This kit lets you make 6 different bags including a drawstring bag, a card holder and a glasses case

Ezcra Animals From Around the World Sewing Kit

There are 8 cute little animals to sew in this kit including a bunny, an owl, a whale and a unicorn. This kit also includes cute fabric stickers to stick on your creations.

The Zenki Way Sewing Kit

This fun kit includes a copy of my book The Zenki Way: A Guide to Designing & Enjoying Your Own Creative Softies, 5 sheets of wool blend felt, 4 pins, a threaded chenille needle and some extra sewing thread. This is the perfect way to get your kids (and you) learning to sew.

2. Books and Beginner Sewing Patterns for Kids

My Sew a Softie Workbooks and patterns in my Etsy shop are designed especially for beginners…kids, parents and teachers. They are based on the zenki design and are made using 2 pieces of felt and a running stitch around the torso. As the zenkis themselves will tell you, they are the simplest (and might I add cutest) to sew softies in the universe.

Sew Together Grow Together : Sewing Projects for Parents and Children

Around the age of 10 and up, many kids are ready to sew more independently and enjoy choosing and making projects on their own. That’s one of the reasons my Sew a Softie Workbooks work so well for this age group. The projects are simple enough for beginners while still giving kids the freedom to be creative without needing constant adult help. Many kids can simply choose a project they love and start sewing straight from the book.

The Best Gift You Can Give

A sewing kit, a book, or a few pieces of felt, a needle and thread might seem simple, but it can spark confidence, imagination, and hours of quiet creativity. Giving your kids the tools and supplies to teach them to sew is giving them a gift that keeps giving.
