Kids love making gifts. And making gifts for their mum (sorry dad) probably tops their list.
Here’s a sweet, easy-to-sew gift that kids are going to have heaps of fun making for mum or even for grand-mum or a friend of course. I call this a Little Purse Person. She’s made from two hearts, which is to say, she’s made from genuine love, and she has a little pocket that’s perfect for holding that special message for mum. And what mum doesn’t love notes from her kids?!
My little purse person is about as simple as it gets. Firstly, she’s made from felt and felt is fantastic to sew with. It’s soft, and that means, it’s easy for kids to push and pull a needle through. Secondly, she’s made from a single simple heart shape. All you have to do is trace and cut out two identical felt hearts to pin and sew together. And lastly, you can choose from a wide range of stitches to sew this little purse. Your kids can decide if they wish to use a running stitch, backstitch, overstitch etc.
Why learning to sew is good for your kids.
Letting your kids decide what stitches they want to use might sound a small thing, but it’s not. Encouraging kids to make simple choices is a really big part of helping them grow into independent, self-confident creative adults. When young kids see that their parents have faith in them, they begin to have faith in themselves. I’ve have mums write to tell me that they could almost see their kids pride and self-confidence growing.
Before I go, I want to say, I love hearts and I’ve used them in a number of easy sewing projects that I’ve designed. Their possibilities seem almost endless. Little Purse Person began as a botched heart project I started playing around with. I cut a slit in the felt and used it to turn the two hearts that I’d sewn inside out and, hey presto, I was holding a little purse. It was like magic! I didn’t expect it at all. So I have great respect for unguided exploration and play. Let your kids experiment, explore and play around with their sewing. You never know what they might come up with.
