Last year I put up a tutorial for a super simple felt Christmas tree ornament that parents can make with their kids. What I liked about that design was that it consisted only of squares and circles threaded together…it was very popular so I thought that this year perhaps I could come up with another Christmas tree ornament…this design is even simpler…if that’s possible…and uses only two strips of felt.
If you’re looking for some easy Christmas softie sewing projects or even more festive softie sewing projects I have you covered. As always!
What You Need
4″ X ½” strip of brown felt
14″ X ½” strip of green felt
30″ length of embroidery thread
Thick sharp needle
A star bead
A seed bead
Hot glue gun
What To Do
Thread the needle, bring the two ends of the embroidery thread together and tie them in a knot.
Glue the knotted end of the embroidery thread onto one end of the strip of brown felt.
To make the tree trunk, take the end that you glued the thread to and roll the strip of brown felt up. Glue down the end of the strip that is on the outside of the trunk.
On the strip of green felt make a line of holes down the middle of the strip as follows: make the first hole ½” from one end of the strip, the next hole 2″ further along, the next hole 2″ further along again, the next 1 ¾” along, the next 1 ¾” along again, the next 1 ½” along, the next 1 ½” along again, the next 1 ¼” along, the next 1 ¼” along again, the next 1″ along, the next 1″ along again, the next ¾” along, the next ¾” along again, the next ½” along, the next ½” along again.
Beginning with the first hole that you made ½” from the end of the strip, poke the needle through all the holes as shown in the three photos below:
Pull the needle and thread through to create your Christmas tree shape.
Thread on the seed bead and then the star bead to complete your Christmas tree ornament.
Cut the needle off and tie the thread in a knot to secure.
If you want, you can add a drop of glue between the top of the trunk and the base of the tree to bind them firmly together.
Have fun, Trixi
