A Simple Bag that Kids can Sew
Kids love collecting…actually adults love collecting too….so I thought it would be fun to design a simple to sew leaf bag that would be great for kids to take with them on their nature walks. I’ve made this bag from a single piece of felt with an autumny colour but you could also choose light or dark greens for Spring…and of course you can change the shape of the leaf to match any of the leaves you find in your area.
All you need is some felt, a needle, some thread and a chalk pencil.
First fold your felt in half. Use the chalk pencil to draw a leaf shape on the felt. Draw the stem of the leaf on the fold so that when you cut your leaf out it looks like the photo above.
Open your leaf as above and draw the leaf’s veins on the bottom leaf shape. Then sew along the vein lines using a running stitch.
The photo above shows how I’ve used a big stitch to go from one branching vein line to the vein line below it. You can see where I’ve started or ended a new line of sewing by the little “tails” of thread…remember, all this sewing is on the inside of the leaf bag and won’t be seen.
Fold the top leaf shape back over what you have just sewn on the inside of the bag. Turn the bag over so you can see the veins of the leaf as above. Now sew the two sides of the leaf together leaving an opening at the top of your bag. Although I’ve used a yellow thread for the veins, I’ve used a red thread to sew my leaf bag together to give a little more hint of autumn colours.
And now you have your simple to sew leaf bag with it’s stem as the handle…and a perfect accessory for any nature-lover’s walks.
If you just can’t stop at one bag you might like to try this tote or this trick or treat bag.
Amazing! So easy but so beautiful! Thank you so much for the inspiration, my friend! Kisses!
That is so sweet, what a lovely idea. This will be one of the features at Handmade Monday when it goes live on Sunday Evening. congrats. 🙂
