I wasn’t thinking of designing another DIY kids’ bookmark when I came up with the idea for this rainbow-rain bookmark.
I was trying to think of something that would be fun to practice running stitch on. As you may know, I’m a great fan of running stitch…it’s easy to learn and quick to sew. This isn’t to say that I don’t like back stitch which is really much slower or blanket stitch which is a tad more fiddly, its just that running stitch ticks all my boxes.
Anyway, I digress. So there I was, just playing around and sewing lines of running stitches on a scrap of felt and thinking what I could make when all those dashes suddenly reminded me of rain and before I could blink this rainbow-rain stitch bookmark came into the world.
I made a video tutorial that shows you how to make this bookmark so I won’t write any step by step instructions here. I used sewing cotton but you can use embroidery floss, perle cotton, wool or any combination of these threads to create your running stitch rain. And if you get hooked on the idea of sewing bookmarks you might like to create your own Long Tall Sally bookmark…she heaps of fun to make…or her bookmark boyfriend Johnnie.
